Artist's Statement
I love creating fine portraiture. The air of excitement and anticipation in the studio during the photographic session energizes and thrills me. Catching fleeting expressions for an heirloom portrait is almost like magic; a magic that I get to be a part of and yet not wholly control. It is almost a dance between myself and my clients with the outcome being much more than simply a record of a certain instant of the family’s life, but rather a piece of art that expresses them deeply and contains fond memories of the love within the family.
I remember the family portraits that we had done as I was growing up. The excitement of getting all dressed up, the amazement of watching the photographer fiddle around getting everything just right, and then seeing the final portrait and loving how great we all looked – like a heroic family in a storybook. I still have those portraits because they mean a great deal to me, especially seeing myself as a little tyke with a tie on! I also love to look at my brothers and see them as I remember them from when I was little.
