Charles to unveil two founder's portraits at Mt Hood Community College
Press Release
3-29-06
Portraits of two of
the founding members of Mt. Hood Community College to be unveiled by local
portrait artist.
Portrait artist Charles Waugh, of Charles Fine Art
Portraits, will be unveiling portraits of Sed Stuart and of Betty Schedeen, both
deceased, two of the founders of Mt. Hood Community College, on April 20th,
2006 at 5:30pm. The Mt. Hood
Community College Foundation commissioned Charles to create the portraits to
honor the memory of Sed and Betty, both of whom were instrumental in founding
the college and who were well-known in the Gresham area.
The unveiling, which will be in the main theater at the
college, will be attended by Robert Silverman, the President of the college, the
families of Sed and Betty, many members of both the Mt. Hood Community College
Board and the MHCC Foundation, city officials, and the community at large.
The unveiling is open to the public with no RSVP required. The portraits
by Charles will be additions to the existing gallery of presidential portraits
and busts displayed in the theater.
Charles works in the digital realm, both as a photographer
and as a digital painter. For this
project, the portraits were created by digitally scanning existing photographic
images of Sed and Betty and then by applying thousands of individual digital
brush-strokes with a pressure-sensitive stylus, just as a painter works upon a
canvas, except in the digital realm. This allowed Charles to composite many
images to develop the final portraits.
The final digital images were laser-printed on archival
silver-halide photographic paper and bonded to artist’s canvas under heat and
pressure, embedding the print into the very fibers of the canvas, exposing the
texture of the canvas. Through this cutting-edge process, Charles creates
portraits that are archival photographic prints yet express the depth and
presence of oil paintings.
Having never actually met either of the subjects, Charles
worked with the families of Sed and of Betty and had them critique the work in
progress to assure that the portraits were accurate representations.
In addition, he utilized landscapes of Mount Hood from his own personal
photographic archives to provide backgrounds for the portraits, since the
college is named after Mt. Hood.
Charles opened his portrait business three years ago, after
careers in fine woodworking and design engineering.
He has a photographic studio in the Clackamas Town Center area and also
works on-location with many of his subjects.
Other projects he has recently completed include creating portraits of 21
celebrities in the Portland area for Girls, Inc., a local charity that works
with at-risk girls through an after-school mentoring program. The list of
subjects for that project included two First Ladies of Oregon, Vera Katz, Tracy
Barry, and others.
