To create the Painterly Portrait I individually add thousands of brushstrokes directly over the photographic image within the digital realm.  By using a state-of-the-art pressure-sensitive monitor and a specialized stylus, I work directly on the image, just as a painter does on a canvas, but with the entire scope of the digital realm at my command.  The stylus is my brush, with an infinite variety of brushes instantly available.  For instance, I can tell the software that the brush I am using is 3/8” in diameter and soft-bristled, or I can use a large fan-shaped brush with widely spaced bristles which leaves a scraggly, raked look.  The digital realm is intoxicating with its varied and spectacular results!

One of the difficulties with 'exhibiting' my work on the web is that the resolution of computer monitors is low (and the size is so small), that the detail is drastically lost.  To remedy this somewhat, some of the portraits below have a detail image following.

The following two images are rather big to truly show the detail in the painting.

The following two portraits were created for Mount Hood Community College to honor two of the founders of the college.  Since both are deceased, the portraits were created from images provided to me by their families.  The portraits were unveiled at MHCC's 40th anniversary celebration on April 20, 2006 and are presently displayed with the portraits of the past presidents in the main theater at MHCC.

This is a composite of three different images provided by Sed Stuart's family with Mount Hood from my own archives added in the background.

Betty Schedeen, from an original photographic portrait done by Edmund Keene about 20 years ago, again with Mount Hood added from my personal archives.
