The 36" x 48" portrait was unveiled Dec. 30th at City Hall during the going-away party for Tom Potter. Tom was deeply moved and repeatedly expressed his appreciation for the work.
Charles presented it as a gift to the City of Portland to commemorate Tom Potter as Portland's 50th Mayor.
A note on the 'Life Collage' process:
Charles created this portrait collage from images supplied by the Mayor's family, from Charles' own archives, images he created at City Hall, and images supplied by the Mayor's staff. Using a pressure-sensitive monitor with a stylus, Charles painted the main images of Tom and Portlandia from existing works. Then, by compositing them together in the digital realm, and blending them into the whole, he created the final work, which is an archival giclee print on canvas. Once this was stretched on the frame, he added water-clear texturing gel over the surface to both protect and add depth to the final portrait.
Charles' photographic studio is in the Clackamas area, and his home and painting/woodworking studio is in the Boring area.
Subjects of the Life Collage
The Life Collage lends itself to commemorating significant achievements of individuals or institutions. An in-depth interview is held to determine the scope of the project and to provide Charles with a broad range of material to work with to compile the final collage.
